So my wife and I are trying to get better at the whole budgeting thing. We’ve had a decent idea of what to do for several years, but haven’t made much progress towards paying off debts or saving much. This came to a head recently when my wife agreed to stay home, instead of paying for a babysitter. It has been a good transition, but challenges definitely are there.
For instance, we make about half of what we did last year; it’s enough to live on, but there isn’t much else for eating out or other extras. This is creating a good thing though. We’ve started eating off a pretty simple menu. In general, simple equals cheaper when shopping for food. This means that we are eating a lot of beans, rice, oatmeal, and vegetables. These are inexpensive foods and they are pretty filling. Since we’re still exercising fairly consistently, ensuring that we get good calories and enough of them is important. Additionally, our kids aren’t big fans of the fancy paleo meals we used to make. However, they destroy bean tacos and oatmeal. It’s kind of amazing to watch.
I don’t know how long we’ll need to stick to this menu, but I could see it being a long-term thing. That being said, oatmeal isn’t a bad way to start the day.
